Park History
Kooser State Park has a rich history, dating back to the mid-1800s when John Kooser settled in the western end of the park near what is now known as Kooser Spring. The early settlers told of an American Indian battle that was fought nearby, and a number of war arrows and spearheads have been found in the area.
In 1925, the Kooser Public Camp was developed at the Van Dyke Spring, which was popular with travelers along PA 31. The camp included an open front lean-to, comfort station, tables and benches, fireplaces, and garbage container. With the advent of affordable automobiles and the growing popularity of auto camping, the camp became even more popular.
During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built many of the park’s facilities, including cabins, a picnic area, and a dam across Kooser Run. The CCC also planted trees and constructed hiking trails throughout the park. Today, visitors can still rent one of the nine cabins built by the CCC, which are available year-round. The cabins are rustic, but a modern showerhouse is nearby.
